How much does it cost to set up an AI agent? A price guide for 2026

One-time setup prices, the three kinds of running cost, and how to compare quotes.

Setting up an AI agent costs a one-time fee from $150 for a planning call to $6,000 and up for a custom app, plus running costs paid to a model provider or an electric company. At TheFireDev, one agent on one machine is $450, open models on hardware you own are $2,500 and one automated workflow is $4,000.

Those numbers cover setup work. They do not cover hardware, a model subscription or the time you spend using the agent. This post separates the three so you can compare quotes on equal terms.

The one-time prices

Every TheFireDev package has a fixed price and a written scope before work starts. Current prices from the packages page:

What the lower prices buy

The $150 strategy call ends with a written plan: which agent, which model, what it costs to run and what to do first. The $450 Agent Setup installs your pick of Claude Code, Codex, Hermes or OMP, writes a rules file for one project, connects up to three tools such as GitHub, email or a calendar, and sets permissions so the agent asks before it sends, spends or deletes. It includes a 30-minute walkthrough, a short runbook and 14 days of email support.

What the higher prices buy

Homelab AI at $2,500 sizes the machine, installs a runtime, tests one or two open models on your own tasks and gives your agents a private endpoint, with monitoring, a configuration backup, a runbook and 30 days of support. Agent Workflow at $4,000 automates one real process on your accounts with a pass/fail test agreed first, a person approving anything sent or changed, and a log of every action. App Build starts at $6,000 and is quoted after a scoping call.

What running an agent costs afterward

Running costs fall into three groups. Which ones apply depends on the model you choose.

  1. A hosted model. You pay a flat monthly subscription or a metered API bill from the provider, such as Anthropic or OpenAI. Agents read many files and run many steps, so a task can use far more tokens than a chat message. Check the provider price list for the exact model before you commit.
  2. A local model. You pay no per-token fee. You pay for the hardware once and for electricity afterward. To estimate electricity, multiply the average wall power in kilowatts by the hours the machine is on and by your utility rate per kWh, idle time included. The homelab cost post has dated speed measurements and memory sizing.
  3. Upkeep. Models, tools and agent software change often. You can handle updates yourself or buy Monthly Support at $1,200 a month for up to 8 hours of changes and fixes.

A common pattern combines both: a hosted coding agent handles hard reasoning, and a local model handles private documents and high-volume drafts. The strategy call is where that split gets decided.

The free route

You can reach a working agent without paying for setup. The MeshVault Harness installs an AI agent, a coding agent and a local model with one command on Linux or macOS. The installer, the command line tool and 11 skills are MIT licensed and cost $0. The Pro skills pack adds 9 skills, memory templates and runbooks for $99, and a done-for-you install on one machine is $499.

The install walkthrough shows the exact commands and the output from a real run. Choose the paid install if you would rather do it on a screen-share with me than alone in the terminal.

How to compare quotes

Ask each provider the same six questions.

  • Is the price fixed, or hourly with an estimate?
  • Is there a written scope and a pass/fail test before work starts?
  • Who holds the keys, the code and the accounts afterward? With TheFireDev you do, and access is removed at handoff.
  • What support follows delivery, and for how long? Agent Setup includes 14 days. Homelab AI, Agent Workflow and App Build include 30.
  • What is excluded? Hardware, model subscriptions and hosting are usually separate.
  • Will you get a written runbook so someone else can run it?

Which package to start with

  • Not sure what you need: book the strategy call. The fee is credited to any package you book within 30 days.
  • You know the tool and want it working on your project: Agent Setup.
  • Your data must stay on hardware you own, or your volume makes per-token billing painful: Homelab AI.
  • One repetitive process eats your week: Agent Workflow.

Questions before you buy are welcome. Write to me with a few lines about your work and I will say which package fits, including when none does.

Questions

How much does it cost to set up an AI agent for a small business?

One agent on one machine is $450. One automated workflow, such as inbox triage or lead follow-up, is $4,000. Running costs come on top and depend on the model: a subscription or API bill for a hosted model, or electricity for a local one.

Is there a monthly fee after setup?

Not from TheFireDev unless you want ongoing help. Monthly Support is $1,200 a month for up to 8 hours of changes and fixes, and you can cancel by email. Your model provider bills you separately for a hosted model.

Do I need to buy new hardware?

Not for Agent Setup, which runs on a computer you already have. Homelab AI needs a computer with a supported GPU or unified memory, and TheFireDev does not resell hardware, so a new machine is a separate purchase.

Can I set up an AI agent for free?

Yes. The MeshVault Harness is a free MIT-licensed installer for an AI agent, a coding agent and a local model on Linux or macOS. You pay nothing for the software and you do the work yourself.

What does the strategy call cost, and is it credited?

The strategy call is $150 for 45 minutes and ends with a written plan. The fee is credited to any package you book within 30 days.
